Project 1 Part A: Developing your own SMART Goals

If you look at the example above, the first statement is a goal and below that you can see each component of SMART - has been highlighted and explained. Also note that some words in the first statement are highlighted in the same colour as their corresponding components below. You must have seen that the entire text is highlighted in grey denoting that it is realistic. Overall you can see that this goal fulfils all the criteria of SMART and is therefore a SMART goal.

Project Overview: We hope that you now feel confident about the importance of developing and writing SMART goals. Practice is the only way for us to learn the art of writing such actionable goals and to make it a habit. Therefore in this project work you will be reflecting on your career plans, identifying your goals and writing them down in your Project Work Document. We will work more on these goals in the upcoming sessions.

Instructions:

1- Identify two or more goals for yourself, that you will be stating as SMART goals.

a- These should be the goals you identified from the purpose maps you made earlier which were derived from your ‘why statements’ from PW 1. We recommend something that you wish to achieve in the next 6 months or so

b- We encourage you to at least have one goal that is fellowship related, highlighting what you hope to gain out of the fellowship (so the time will also need to be within 2 months). E.g. you can talk about a skill that you hope to develop within this program

2- Apply the guidelines on developing and writing SMART goals.

3- State your goals in the PW document.

4- With each goal describe components that make it Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound as shown in the guidelines

5- You will also be bringing these goals to the next in-person session!
